There's a car seat available for anyone who needs a ride to Washington. It's leaving Valparaiso for DC on Friday morning, 6 a.m. There's also a hotel room available, to be shared with another male visitor. Let me know by 8 p.m. Thursday if you want it. You can call me at 219-459-1988. Bonnie Kuzminski

This comment applies to the Traverse City to DC bus which, on September 11, starts in Traverse City and picks up passengers in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Brighton then proceeds to the Washington DC area.

The Traverse City to DC bus will pick up Kalamazoo area riders at the Comstock Park Park&Ride lot, location described below. The bus will not be able to come to the Kalamazoo area to pick up passengers. The additional time and mileage required will not fit into an acceptable schedule.

The pickup time at the Comstock Park Park&Ride lot will be approximately 9:00 AM, Friday, September 11. A more specific time will be determined and communicated soon.

Park&Ride Lot Details for Grand Rapids/Comstock Park

Primary Route: US-131
Local Route: West River Road
Exit Number: 91
Entrance Sign: Yes
Pay Phone: Near

Directions if you are coming from south of Grand Rapids:
From northbound US-131 take exit 91 (north of Grand Rapids). Turn right (southwest) onto West River Road. Lot is first right (northwest, inside the interchange).

Do not confuse the above described pickup location with the Comstock Riverside Park which is south of I-96 on the east bank of the Grand River. Do not go to the Comstock Riverside Park to get on the Traverse City to DC bus. Do go to the Comstock Park Park&Ride lot, described above.

If you have any questions, call Tom Calkins, 269-521-4215. If Tom is not available, an answering machine will take a message. If your need for information is urgent, call Tom's cell phone, 941-725-0710.

This comment applies to the Traverse City to DC bus. The deadline for making hotel reservations at the group rate is August 21. You can still make a reservation after August 21 but you are not assured to receive the group rate. If you have any questions e-mail Tom Calkins (TRCalkins8291@aol.com) or call (269-521-4215).

This comment applies to the Traverse City to DC bus that has the possibility of a pickup point in the Kazoo area. I just talked to the trip coordinator. He confirmed that a Kazoo pick up is still being considered, but, since an alternative bus has been announced (starting from Madison Heights), he needs to know how many Kazoo participants prefer a Kazoo pick up. Please call ASAP Jason Gillman 231-932-9550 and tell him what you can of your intentions. If he does not get an indication of significant interest, the pickup point for Kazoo riders will be in Comstock Park in Grand Rapids

To avoid possible confusion I want to clarify that my previous comment relates to the "Traverse City to DC" bus that will pick up Kalamazoo area participants at Comstock Park in Grand Rapids or, possibly, in the Kalamazoo area -- pick up location not yet final.

I suggest, to avoid future confusion, that any additional comments relating to bus transportation to the DC event clearly state which bus option the comment applies to.

Jason Gillman, Trip Coordinator, located in Travers City, sent the following hotel information to all people who have signed up for the trip. My impression is that some of you are still considering signing up for the bus trip but have hesitated wanting more lodging information. Therefore, I am inserting the lodging information here FYI.

Jason will be sending the bus itinerary out in a couple days. When he does, I will insert the information here in this events comments section. If you want to sign up for the trip, call Jason. His phone number is at the end of this comment.

Hotel Accommodations:

A block of 30 rooms for September 11 and 12 have been reserved. The rooms are at the Sleep Inn, 2 Research Court, Rockville, Maryland.

The room rate is $69.00/night ($79.35, including tax) for a single (one queen bed), and $74.00/night ($85.10 including tax) for a double (two double beds).

EACH PERSON MAKING A RESERVATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTACTING THE HOTEL’S RESERVATION SYSTEM TO MAKE THEIR RESERVATION. This is more reliable, less cumbersome and less prone to errors than having someone in our group serving as a middleman. Your should make your reservation ASAP, in any case, not later than August 21. After August 21 any unreserved rooms in our group reservation will be returned for use by the Hotel’s reservation system. After August 21, you can still make a reservation, but you will not receive the group rate.

Make reservations using the following procedure:

(1) Call the Sleep Inn number 301-948-8000. You will hear a recorded announcement that says “Thank you for calling the Sleep Inn Shady Grove” followed by a menu that includes “ For room reservations, press 1” At this time, press “1”. A reservation clerk will answer.

(2) Ask for a late arrival reservation for September 11 and 12 at the group rate for the Michigan Tea Patriots Group. You can guarantee the late arrival with a credit card. (If you do not want to use a credit card, you will have to arrange to send a check directly to the hotel for the first night’s charge.)

(3) Important – Make sure the clerk understands that you are a member of the Michigan Tea Patriots Group. Tell the reservation clerk about any special requests you have. If you have a problem with stairs, you don’t need to request a ground level room. There is an elevator.

(4) Record the reservation Confirmation number for possible future use. If you provide the clerk with your e-mail address, an e-mail confirmation will be sent to you.

If you need to cancel the reservation, it is your personal responsibility to do so. Call the hotel (301-948-8000) to cancel. Make sure you get and record the cancellation number for possible future use.

Here are some additional details about the Sleep Inn Shady Grove copied from their web page.

Free deluxe continental breakfast

Free wireless high-speed Internet access in all rooms

Free weekday newspaper

Free shuttle service to the Shady Grove Metro Station (contact the hotel
for more details)

Free local calls

The shuttle service to/from the Shady Grove Metro Station can be used if you want to travel to/from the DC mall at a time other than when our bus takes our group, or, if you miss the bus to/from the mall.

If you have any questions about reservations, need help making a reservation or if you encounter any other problem making your reservation, immediately call Tom Calkins, home: 269-521-4215. If Tom is not home, an answering machine will take a message, or, call Tom’s cell 941-725-0710.
