(Here's a recent letter I sent to Congressman Upton. It explains where I stand with Jack Hoogendyk.)

Congressman Fred Upton

Upton for all of us

PO Box 490

St. Joseph, MI 49085-0490

Dear Congressman,

I read your March 28, 2012, fundraising letter with a heaviness I have not felt for some time now. It’s not just with all the things going on in my family’s life at this particular time, it’s with the seriousness we find our Nation, State, and local governments. As you know, my dad continues his battle with terminal cancer. This mortality or baptism of death that we all must endure at some point caused me to consider the foreboding destruction of our Nation an equal to this deadly disease.

Under your (26) years of Congressional service to this great Nation, we now find ourselves totally wiped out with $15,600,000,000,000 in debt with a deemed Presidential budget that will increase to around $17,000,000,000,000 before the end of this budget year. Most Americans understand that for several years you have dealt with dishonest brokers in the Senate and House and, in my opinion, the only available options were to shut down the government and force them to do the right thing and balance the nation’s budget; or, allow the President’s budget to be deemed passed and avoid the head-on collision that must eventually take place because of progressive governmental expansionism and untold corruption. That insane debt amount coupled with Presidential appointees rewriting every rule and regulation for every sector of our society into a ubiquitous Socialist/Marxist unconstitutional progressive creature, without Congressional approval, only heightens the burdens almost all Americans feel deep down.

The Federal Reserve continues to do as it wills, without any real oversight. I learned that this Bank actually makes more money per quarter than all our major oil companies put together, and at taxpayer expense. Unchecked inflation surely the future for us all, and untenable interest rates a must to attempt and suck the trillions of paper dollars pumped into the world’s economy back into the Fed’s coffers in accordance with Keynesian policies, all will only serve to bring our economy to a standstill with any future administration, all the while Congress does little to prevent it from coming.

Several unconstitutional Departments, Boards, and Offices have grown to such burdensome bureaucratic nightmares and operate without real Congressional direction and often at direct opposition to us all. One example, the Department of Energy was created to deal with OPEC’s embargo in the 1970’s and to help forge America’s energy policy into total independence from such foreign interference from ever shuttering our economy again. An “all of the above” approach was sold to us now for 40+ years, yet how many years now without additional refineries, nuclear power plants, and more to simply get us off of OPEC oil alone. Wow, or as you so aptly said in your letter about the Keystone Pipeline: “Good Grief!”

The health care takeover was a result of decades of indecision, misdirection, inaction, soaring costs, and a disrespectful democrat controlled government that we all did what we could to prevent. That’s where we met if you recall, right after a code red Tea Party rally. As I reflect back on Hillary Care and the outpouring of civilians that stood up and said “NO” back then, much time and expense to fix the problems was given to those that promised then to do so. That time slipped away from you and the others you served with since then. What happened with fixing the problems? You waited too long and what we knew would bankrupt our Nation even then, we now see actually done in Obamacare, with true costs hidden from what many of us see as a major part of this administration’s desire to collapse our system of government.

I am not totally convinced that we are about to face the biggest constitutional crisis since the days of Lincoln. The evidence or simple proofs and facts about this President’s history continue to leak out, with no help from Congress. The failure of this Administration to uphold all the laws of our Nation like DOMA for example, break the oath of office do they not? AG Holder’s abject failure continues. At a minimum, whenever our President bows before a foreign leader showed such disrespect for his office, our Nation, and our position of leadership in the world that I worry even more – especially for our friends in Israel and our grandchildren. What has Congress done in resolving the questions posed by the people about the President? Nothing.

Finally Congressman, we got to meet at Lunker’s on May 29, 2010. My wife and I believed you were sincere and we took you at your word. I hope you took me at mine when I shared that the Tea Party wanted two separate amendments: 1) a Balanced Budget Amendment which your branch took up with failure in the Senate as a result of its leadership (again a dishonest broker), and 2) a Term Limits Amendment which I suggested a 12/12 year duration, but that many have differing views on length of office terms. The latter you showed indifference toward and said you were doing good work, especially with the upcoming Chairmanship. Fred, I told you that whenever you spend that much time in DC, you get too much crap on you. After (26) years of House service, you have been too long. Our First President and other Founders provided words of wisdom to all those that follow about returning home after limited length of service. It’s time and the next paragraph will explain why I know this time is now for you.

On May 29, 2010, Fred Upton signed the “To Congress, The 5 Pledges.” Five points as follows:

  1. I believe in a balanced budget and therefore will vote for a freeze in government spending until that goal is realized.
  2. I believe government should not increase the financial burden on its citizenry during difficult economic times therefore I will oppose all tax increases until our economy has rebounded.
  3. I believe more than four decades of U.S. dependence on foreign oil is a travesty therefore I will support an energy plan that calls for immediately increasing usage of all domestic resources including nuclear energy, natural gas, and coal as necessary. (Oil was also assumed here)
  4. I believe in the sovereignty and security of our country and therefore will support measures to close our borders except for designated immigration points so we will know who is entering and why and I will vehemently oppose any measure giving another country, the United Nations, or any other entity, power over U.S. citizens.
  5. I believe the United States of America is the greatest country on earth and therefore will not apologize for policies or actions which have served to free more and feed more people around the world than any other nation on the planet.

You voted to increase our debt which also increased spending for every year into the foreseeable future. You voted to allow a tax increase with the “death tax.” However, you tried to hold off any additional tax increases. Our energy policies in the last few years are so wacky and unhelpful in any hope for becoming independent that everyone I know shakes their heads with dismay. Our borders continue to remain porous with Border States now being sued by the Federal Government for the same States trying to lead in the security and integrity along the same. Also, we see underhanded attempts to bind us all by foreign and domestic entities by congressional mandates, administrative rules, and executive branch agreements with foreign governments, the UN, and more. The greatest country of all earth is on the verge of collapse as a result of the most reckless spending spree equal to our egos times billions, and now new controls are placed upon us at every level to make us become something we never dreamt possible. What follows as a result of these? Why did you not do everything possible to follow (5) basic principles that you agreed to follow?

My ethics professor was Dr. Ebbie Smith. He had a few axioms worth sharing. “Principles are few, but values are many.” He forced us to deal with our basic principles that we set for our own lives, and he would lay out various scenarios to test those principles. Then, he would say, “In the middle of the road are yellow stripes and dead armadillos and you ain't neither” (that was in Texas), meaning we all must make a stand in all things. Depending where we place our principles as priority, that’s where we will land when faced with making decisions on which direction we will go.

Fred, I like you. I consider you with respect for who you are and what you’ve achieved. Actually proud to know you and hope that I helped you behind the scenes in some way. At a minimum, I have prayed for you often. As I told you at another friend’s driveway not long ago, I feel you betrayed the pledge you took. I also remind you of our conversation at Lunker’s on 5/29/10 that this should be your last term as you’ve been there too long now. For these reasons I now turn my attention to support another for our Nation’s office of House of Representatives. If after the primary you remain the republican candidate, I will work to see you re-elected. Until then, I will work to see Mr. Jack Hoogendyk become the next congressman for our district.

Prayerfully written,

Dr. Scott Davis
