. . . for contacting me to voice your support for investigating the Bush Administration. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me on such an important issue.
As one of his first official acts, on January 22, 2009 President Obama signed an Executive Order banning the use of torture and requiring that American intelligence agencies use interrogation methods authorized by the U.S. Army Field Manual. He also signed an order to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay within a year. His order also suspends the trials of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay until the Justice Department reviews each of their cases. It is very important that all detainees are afforded the rights mandated by the Geneva Convention. I have supported legislation banning torture in the past, and I applaud President Obama for his actions.
The United States has always been a beacon of hope for the world, and our efforts to fight terrorism cannot be allowed to undermine our moral standing and credibility. Should legislation regarding the investigation of the Bush Administration come before me, I will keep your views in mind.
