Liberty and Freedom

Mission Statement and Core Principles - Final Edition

The following is the final edition of the Mission Statement and Core Principles for the South West Michigan Tea Party Patriots. Gene will be publishing them at the next meeting, and Tia will be using this version when designing our pamphlets and for inclusion on future web page postings.

Much work went into the wording and phrasing of this document, and I thank all of you for your contributions and patience. I believe we have always had a Mission to pursue, and a set of Principles upon which to pursue that Mission, we just needed to clearly define them both. We now have a written statement that does just that. Nothing more ... nothing less.

I understand that many people wanted more definition and substance in the Principles Section. But to many of us this was going too far into individual issues that were divisive and distracting us from our Mission. In the end, we decided on a smaller, more concise version - much like what we are advocating for our government.

Of course, in the future, revisions will probably be necessary. When improvements to this document are needed, please forward suggestions to our elected leaders for consideration and adoption.

Thank you again. Doug Till.

Mission Statement

To firmly communicate to our elected officials the message that they must return to the principles, laws and values upon which our nation was founded: Individual liberty, limited government, and a respect for the Constitution.

Core Principles

The Southwest Michigan Tea Party Patriots is a true grassroots organization. We are not united under a single political party or leader; however, we are united under the following Core Principles:

• Respect for the Constitution

Our government is a republic based on our Constitution and we expect our elected officials to write laws that respect the Constitution as written, or to lawfully amend the Constitution.

• Limited Government

Government at all levels has grown too big and too powerful, and as such is taking away individual freedoms and liberty. We support a return to a smaller, less intrusive and more manageable government that answers to the people as the Founders intended.

• Separation of Powers

The proper role of the Legislative Branch is to use plain language to write laws that, within the limits of the Constitution, protect the rights and liberties of the individual citizen.

The proper role of the Executive Branch is to execute and enforce the Constitution and the laws written by the Legislature.

The proper role of the Judicial Branch is to strictly interpret the Constitution and laws as written by the legislature. Judges who legislate from the bench steal constitutional authority and thus liberty from the people.

• Protection of Individual Rights

As conceived in the Declaration of Independence, our nation guarantees that each individual is endowed by his Creator with certain unalienable rights, those being; "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." It is the responsibility of the federal government, as defined in the Constitution, to protect the individual rights of the American citizen.

• Fiscal Responsibility and Transparency

Fiscal responsibility is the duty of all elected officials. Balanced budgets and transparency of expenditures is paramount to public trust. Budget deficits represent generational theft.

• Free Trade and Commerce

Free trade between individuals and corporations is crucial to maintaining a prosperous civil society. Intrusion of the Federal government in the banking, financial and corporate industries, and any governmental collusion with corporations, unions or special interest groups is a violation of the Constitution.

• Taxes

We support the movement to replace the current system of tax codes with a fairer, flatter, more equitable system.

The United States is a capitalist nation where citizens have the right to prosper and accumulate individual wealth. We vigorously oppose all policies which attempt to redistribute individual wealth and earned income through the confiscation of tax revenue.
