The founders warned that the Constitution and the new federal government was only fit for a Christian nation as immorality would kill it. So true. But they had the advantage of being (self) educated men who looked at cultures over the over 3000 years of recorded history to reach that conclusion. Even Rome was a very moral and religious culture up until about the first century BC when the Republic collapsed under Caesar.
