Early unions fought for better pay, safer working conditions and shorter work hours, protections now mostly granted by federal and state law. Unfortunately, today's unions have become a force for bigger government and higher taxes. It's no wonder--government-sector union membership now exceeds private-sector union membership, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
